The Rider Who Hates His Horse

"A president who slights the Constitution is like a rider who hates his horse: he will be thrown, and the nation along with him.  The President solemnly swears to perserve, protect and defend the Constitution.  He does  not solemnly swear to ignore, overlook, supplement or reinterpret it......For if a President joins the powers of his office to his own willful interpretation, he steps away from a government of laws and toward a government of men."

--- Mike Pence, US Representative, Indiana's 6th Congressional District.

As many know, President Obama was a Constitutional Law Professor at the University of Chicago.  Why does one study Constitutional Law?  Among the reasons might be to have a better understanding of how to preserve, protect and defend it or on the other hand how to ignore, overlook, or reinterpret it.   Which one is true of Mr. Obama?

And why have we set up a Republic with the Constitution as its guardian?  In the same speech, Mike Pence gives a solid reason.  To limit power.   As he says, "Power is an instrument of fatal consequence.  It is confined no more readily than quicksilver, and escapes good intentions as easily as air flows through mesh. ..... A republic is about limitation, and for good reason, because we are mortal, and our actions are imperfect.

Ohio's Destructive Tax System, Part 2

John Kasich, at his announcement for candidate for governor, said in his speech that it was a crime that in order to visit prominent retired Ohio Businessmen, you generally have to take a trip to Florida*....

I recently sent you an excerpt from Jack Boyle's article in the journal, The Ohio Society of CPA's.
The title of the article is "Campaign seeks end to Ohio's Estate Tax".

Here's the full article...

A key point of this article is that ironically, a tax designed to target the rich is easily avoided by the rich because they can simply leave the state, while middle class citizens, who may not have that option, end up paying the bill.

Do you agree with Jack Boyle, that eliminating Ohio's Estate Tax would go a long way towards improving Ohio's tax structure, and along with it Ohio's economy?

Comments welcome.

The World at Night

Check out this photo.  It's a photo of the world at night.   From it, you can see the developed parts of the globe because of the lights.

There are two ways to look at this photo.

In the socialist/envirofascist vision, the world is finite, and it not being fair that some parts of the world have lights and others don't, then what needs to happen is for the developed world to use less energy, so that the world will be equally dark, equally powerless.

In the free market vision, the world is continually surpassing limits.... and... there sure are a lot of dark places in the world.   What can we do to bring light and power there too?

Does Wikileaks Vindicate Bush's Actions Against Iraq?

Do Wikkileaks documents back up Bush's assertions that Iraq had, or were developing weapons of mass destruction?  Perhaps so.  See below..

Iran and the Stuxnet Worm

Check this out.   Maybe the US is right now scoring a technological victory against Iran's nuclear ambitions with its new Stuxnet "computer missile".   Apparently the missile, more accurately called a "computer worm" has been reeking havoc at Iran's nuclear facilities.   If you read the full article, it's said that it represents such a technological advance that it's like introducing an F35 into a WWI battlefield.

If it stops or at least delays Iran's nuclear weapons development it will be well worth it.

The only thing that worries me is if our enemies could develop and use similar weapons to disrupt American computers.

VOICES for REASON: “Iran and the Stuxnet worm” plus 1 more

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 09:31 AM PST
Back in October, I was interviewed on PJTV about the Stuxnet “worm,” which had reportedly sabotaged two of Iran’s (sinister) nuclear facilities. At the time, it seemed that worm — a self-replicating computer malware program — had been crafted specifically to cripple the computer systems at the Iranian facilities. Now, more signs have emerged that the “worm” is continuing to subvert Iran’s facilities.
Though Stuxnet remains enigmatic, this article caught my eye because it sketches in a few more facts about Stuxnet. In particular, the article lays out what investigators have learned so far about the worm’s sophisticated self-concealment and pinpoint targeting. For instance:
Masking itself from the [nuclear] plant’s security and other systems, the worm then ordered the centrifuges to rotate extremely fast, and then to slow down precipitously. This damaged the converter, the centrifuges and the bearings, and it corrupted the uranium in the tubes. It also left Iranian nuclear engineers wondering what was wrong, as computer checks showed no malfunctions in the operating system.
Estimates are that this went on for more than a year, leaving the Iranian program in chaos. And as it did, the worm grew and adapted throughout the system. As new worms entered the system, they would meet and adapt and become increasingly sophisticated.
… the worm was designed to allow the Iranian program to continue but never succeed, and never to know why. [The whole thing is worth reading.]
Two quick comments: 1. There are some scarily brilliant minds behind the design and implementation of the Stuxnet worm. If indeed it is a U.S.-backed, calculated cyber attack on Iran’s facilities, I would applaud the folks who created it. 2. Is sabotaging Iran’s nuclear program enough to safeguard us? It buys us time — and that’s a good thing — but we must remember that the threat from Iran is broader than just its nuclear ambitions.

Ohio's Destructive Tax System

"The Tax Foundation http://www.taxfoundation.org/files/bp60.pdf ranks Ohio's state & local tax as the 4rth most destructive in the US, trailed only by New Jersey, New York, and California.   Over the past 12 years, a net of 500,000 Ohioans have moved out of the state for better Opportunities elsewhere"    ---Jack Boyle from an Article in the Ohio Society of CPA's

I haven't done an analysis myself, but Mr. Boyle seems to imply that there is a correlation between migration out of Ohio and its tax system.   Do you think he's right?

Tax Producers vs Tax Consumers: A video

Here's a great video from New Zealand that explains private sector vs. public sector and taxes.

Rascist Tea Partiers Mess Up Again

This year, two black Republicans were elected to Congress: Allen West in Florida and Tim Scott in South Carolina.  The latter won his primary over two political scions: Paul Thurmond and Carroll A. Campbell III.  There are now two Hispanic governors in the country, both of them Republican, both of them elected on November 2: Brian Sandoval in Nevada and Susan Martinez in New Mexico.  the latter is the first female Hispanic governor in the country.  There are also two Indian-American governors, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and the newly elected Nikki Haley of South Carolina. (Note that these are southern states.)  Both are Republicans.  Those racist Tea Partiers sure fouled up.

November 2010 Elections

Congratulations on the sea-change election of 2010.  Traditional American values are again on the ascendancy..... Still, here is a good quote from Winston Churchill that is very applicable today...

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end.  But it is perhaps the end of the beginning."

Juan Williams Sacked at NPR

Incredible.  Check this out.  I've been listening to Juan Williams for many years on NPR and also of Fox News.   He is reliably liberal, even socialist.  For example a couple of nights ago, he defended NYC rent control....and of course if you espouse a position that says that government can dictate how much you can charge (or not charge) for a good or service, then you are espousing a quintessentially socialist view.

Nonetheless, I've always admired Juan, because, in addition to his charming sense of humor, he, unlike most liberals, is actually willing to list and expound his reasons for his beliefs.   I still don't agree with him, but at least he's not a coward.

Today, after over 10 years of service to NPR, he was sacked.   His crime?   He voiced his feeling that when he's at the airport, and he sees people around him in Muslim garb, he gets nervous.   See the video below......

Now had he said that he gets nervous when he sees someone toting a Bible he would have gotten a promotion of course.   But for "crossing the line" and expressing his feelings regarding Muslims, he gets sacked.

Now look, I like NPR.   Their reporting is in-depth and creative and they cover some topics many radio stations do not.  And so I have been a long-time listener.   But I always put up my BS radar, because when it comes to political ideology it is immanently apparent where they stand, and that they are ever-ready to give conservative opinion the shaft.   And yet, I have to pay, with my tax dollars for this bias.   If NPR had to support itself without subsidization, they would, like Air America, have left the air long ago.

So now, is it just coincidence that Mr. Obama's puppet-master, George Soros recently donated 1.8 million to NPR?   Is it just coincidence, that since the left can't destroy Fox and conservative radio with another speech restricting "fairness" doctrine that they find other despicable ways to attack opposing views?

Where is the freedom of speech now?  Liberals and the left are being exposed as posers when it comes to the first amendment.  They don't really want freedom of speech or the press unless it is freedom to control the media and espouse only their views.

Poem: A Salute to Green Eggs & Ham

No, I didn't write it, but I wish I had.  One of my favorites as a kid was Green Eggs & Ham.  Here's a great updated twist on the classic.....

I Do not like this Uncle Sam

I do not like this Uncle Sam,
I do not like his health care scam.

I do not like these dirty crooks,
or how they lie and cook the books.

I do not like when Congress steals,
I do not like their secret deals.

I do not like this speaker Nan ,
I do not like this 'YES, WE CAN'.

I do not like this spending spree---
I'm smart, I know that nothing's free.

I do not like your smug replies,
when I complain about your lies.

I do not like this change and hope.
I do not like it. nope, nope, nope!
Go green - recycle Congress in 2010!

The Improving State of the World

I was riding my bike outside Mechanicsburg, Ohio.   I saw a basin some 5 acres in size with an earthen dam at one end. Bulldozers were moving earth inside the basin.   Up at the top of the hill, overlooking this soon-to-be lake, was a nice house.

Surely the new lake is likely to double the value of the property.   Surely the view will be lovely.  Surely recreational opportunities will abound for the owners of the property and invited friends and relatives.  Its a win for man.

But just as surely it's a win for nature.   Animals from the surrounding forests will have a source of water and additional food.  New animals will move into the area.   Fish will have a new habitat as well as waterfowl..... perhaps muskrats and other water bound mammals.
It's a win-win situation.

It's surely no coincidence that the countries of the world with the greatest abundance of wildlife, and the cleanest air and water are also those that show a greater degree of economic development.   The equation, often repeated that economic development = environmental degradation is demonstrably false.  While it's not a straight line progression, a much better case can be made for the equation.... economic development = an improving environment.

I was struck about a year ago with the almost despairing attitude of our young nephew, Luke regarding the state of our environment.   To hear him talk, it's never been worse. Apparently this is what he'd been taught in school.  But of course it has been much worse.  The air was much dirtier when I was a kid.  I've ridden my bike both in the pre-catalytic converter era and the post.  Believe me, it's much easier to breath now.  Back then, you almost never saw the now ubiquitous deer and Canadian geese.  Lake Erie was proclaimed dead.   Now I'm not saying that kids shouldn't be taught to respect the environment, and take care of it.   But the alarmist theme they pick up..... it only paves the way for hair brained schemes like cap & trade which will promptly degrade our economy..... and unfortunately, following the above more accurate equation, result in the degradation of our environment..... the opposite of the desired result..... unless of course if the desired result is more government control and less liberty.

Any way, below is a great  read on that topic...  Check it out!

Mary Jo Kilroy: Master of Deciept

(from June 2010)

As you know we have a big government liberal, Mary Jo Kilroy who squeaked her way into the our district's house of representative slot by fewer than 200 votes, on the coats of the Barak Obama.   She votes for any big government program that comes by and is the President's, and Nancy Pelosi's yes-man.

Recently, she aired a re-election commercial in which she brags that she did not vote for the bank bail-out--- also known as Tarp.   As you may know, Tarp was the disaster promoted and passed during the waning days of the Bush Administration in 2008.   It gave Secretary Paulson unconstitutional and dictatorial power to "stimulate" the country's banking and financial institutions in anyway he saw fit.   The plan was to reward the idiotic behavior of financial corporations by giving grants.   Of course, after it was passed, it morphed into a government equity stake in the financial institutions, and then morphed again, against the house's expressed consent, into a bailout for our loser auto companies, GM and Chrysler.   Despite being supported by a Republican President, the measure was passed by an overwhelming majority of democrats, and a handful of Republicans.    Hillary, Barak, and even the weak-kneed Rino,  McCain voted in favor.

Now that it has proven to be the boon-doggle everyone should have known it would be, and now that it has been exponentially compounded by several Obama "stimulus'", (aka Democratic slush funds) Mary Jo wants you to know that she did not vote for that thing.

Wanna know why?   She was not in office when it passed.  She couldn't have voted on it if she had wanted to.   Of course given her penchant for ever-increasing government control of our lives and the crushing of our liberties, you can bet she really wanted to.

Role Reversal

No, I didn't write it, but it makes a humorous, and not entirely inaccurate point about the state of our nation's immigration policies... except that it represents a role reversal

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. Obama:

I'm planning to move my family and extended family to Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me.

We’re planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico , and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws.

I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I’m on my way over?
Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. All Mexican government forms printed in English.
4. My children taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.
5. Classes on American culture and history for my children.
6. The American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.
7. Both breakfast and lunch for my children while they are in school.

8. A Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services. (I do plan to buy a car and drive in Mexico , but I don’t plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. Oh, and can you confirm that they have a cash-for-clunkers deal also? I’d like to get $4,500 from Mexico toward the purchase of my new Chevy.)
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house, put U S. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.
13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.
14. Food stamps.
15. Subsidized rent, of course.

16. I'll need Income tax credits so that, although I won't pay any Mexican income taxes, I'll receive money from its government.
17. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U.S. from Mexico . I am sure that President Calderon won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

You're Da man!!!

Vote No on Issue One

From April 2010

Hi,

Here's a letter my wife wrote to the Columbus Dispatch.   She's right you know...   The so called "third frontier" is supposed to promote and finance innovative new companies.  Do the Cleveland Clinic and the Ohio State University sound like new companies?  And  if Third Frontier funds reward such companies, who is the government (using our tax dollars) to decide who the winners and losers should be?   Shouldn't it be the market place that rewards (or punishes) risk takers?   The promoters of this government power grab argue that taxes will not be raised because it is financed by the sale of bonds, but we all know that these must be paid back.  Know who pays it back?   Me and you.  Earlier this year the Columbus Dispatch reported on the number of jobs "created" by the program.   We did a little math.   If you divided the funds disbursed by the number of "created" jobs, it worked out to $139,000 per job!    Now if someone gave you $139,000 don' t you think you could create more than one job?    Read Kathy's letter.   See if you don't agree.  If so, vote no, and tell others to do the same.

Best Wishes,

Bernie Iven

Dear Editor,
On May 4, Ohioans will have an opportunity to vote on Issue 1 which is to continue the Ohio Third Frontier program by offering $700,000,000 in general obligation bonds with the intent to fund research and development within the State of Ohio and, according to the Third Frontier website, “to create high-wage jobs, new growth companies, and globally competitive products.”
According to The Cleveland Plain Dealer  (http://blog.cleveland.com/pdextra/2010/03/third_frontier_grants_for_2009.html), from 2002 through 2010, entities that have been awarded Third Frontier funds include Case Western Reserve ($10,000,000+), Kent State ($15,000,000+), Cleveland Clinic ($149,000,000+), Ohio State University ($162,000,000+), University of Akron ($16,000,000+) and the University of Cincinnati ($50,000,000+).
In addition to government intervention in the free market system and more debt to the state, why is this program granting millions of dollars to large institutions? And how is this program supporting new growth companies?
I urge thoughtful Ohioans to Vote NO on Issue 1.  Issue 1 means $700,000,000 more debt to the State of Ohio .  Issue 1 means supporting large institutions with tax-payer money. Issue 1 means more government intervention by allowing government to pick the winners and losers in the marketplace.  Issue 1 means big government.  Issue 1 means more government control and intervention.
Take a stand. Vote ‘no’ to more government debt. Vote ‘no’ to tax-payer funded and government-favored entities.  Vote ‘no’ to big government.  Vote ‘No’ on Issue 1.

Contract FROM America

In 1994, the Republican Party issued its famous "Contract with America".   It was a good start, but times have changed.   Technology has put the American people themselves in the lead.

It's time now, not for another Contract with America, but a Contract From America.

Click to go to www.thecontract.org   Read the Contract From America.  It's about LIBERTY.   Individual liberty, Limited Government, and Economic Freedom.    The first of the 10 points is is foundational..... Protect the Constitution.

Can you help make the Constitution a priority in our government?

Yes you can!

After you go to http://www.thecontract.org/ , sign the Contract FROM America... and sign on to LIBERTY!

Nearly 500,000 Amerians have already done so.

What else can you do?

Vote for candidates who support The Contract FROM America.

Below is a short description from the site.
------------------------------------------------------------------

The Contract from America serves as a clarion call for those who recognize the importance of free market principles, limited government, and individual liberty. It is the natural extension of a movement that began in the local communities and quickly spread across America in response to unprecedented government expansion, reckless spending, and a blatant disregard by our leaders of the nation’s founding principles.
During the past several months, hundreds of thousands of Americans have debated thousands of ideas to solve our nation’s most pressing problems. 454,331 votes were cast. It has been an open process and has provided a genuine opportunity to give voice to a broad cross section of concerned Americans.

Hell No, Mary Jo

Check out the video of the Mary Jo Killroy/Obmama care protest.  Mary Jo was our Democratic representative in the US House, who, despite massive oppostition, as you'll see in the video, voted in favor of the Obama Care.  I say redistribute liberty!   If you look carefully, you'll see as the van passes in front of the black woman, Alicia Healy a top notch candidate for state representative, my wife Kathy Iven, holding up her homemade sign that read "Hell No Mary Jo."    Click below.

The Fault Lies Either with Global Warming or George Bush

Hi,

I know it's easy to get down on ourselves.   Maybe you're falling behind, not able to keep up, to work hard enough.   Well, just keep in mind that it's not really your fault.  In the end, the thing to blame is either: Global Warming, or as the below article indicates, George Bush

Green: Obama is a victim of Bush's failed promises

By CHUCK GREEN
Columnist
Published: Sunday, February 7, 2010 11:14 AM MST

Barack Obama is setting a record-setting number of records during his first year in office.

Largest budget ever. Largest deficit ever. Largest number of broken promises ever. Most self-serving speeches ever. Largest number of agenda-setting failures ever. Fastest dive in popularity ever.

Wow. Talk about change.

Just one year ago, fresh from his inauguration celebrations, President Obama was flying high. After one of the nation’s most inspiring political campaigns, the election of America’s first black president had captured the hopes and dreams of millions. To his devout followers, it was inconceivable that a year later his administration would be gripped in self-imposed crisis.

Of course, they don’t see it as self imposed. It’s all George Bush’s fault.

George Bush, who doesn’t have a vote in Congress and who no longer occupies the White House, is to blame for it all.

He broke Obama’s promise to put all bills on the White House web site for five days before signing them.

He broke Obama’s promise to have the congressional health care negotiations broadcast live on C-SPAN.

He broke Obama’s promise to end earmarks.

He broke Obama’s promise to keep unemployment from rising above 8 percent.

He broke Obama’s promise to close the detention center at Guantanamo in the first year.

He broke Obama’s promise to make peace with direct, no pre-condition talks with America’s most hate-filled enemies during his first year in office, ushering in a new era of global cooperation.

He broke Obama’s promise to end the hiring of former lobbyists into high White House jobs.

He broke Obama’s promise to end no-compete contracts with the government.

He broke Obama’s promise to disclose the names of all attendees at closed White House meetings.

He broke Obama’s promise for a new era of bipartisan cooperation in all matters.

He broke Obama’s promise to have chosen a home church to attend Sunday services with his family by Easter of last year.

Yes, it’s all George Bush’s fault. President Obama is nothing more than a puppet in the never-ending, failed Bush administration.

If only George Bush wasn’t still in charge, all of President Obama’s problems would be solved. His promises would have been kept, the economy would be back on track, Iran would have stopped its work on developing a nuclear bomb and would be negotiating a peace treaty with Israel, North Korea would have ended its tyrannical regime, and integrity would have been restored to the federal government.

Oh, and did I mention what it would be like if the Democrats, under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, didn’t have the heavy yoke of George Bush around their necks. There would be no earmarks, no closed-door drafting of bills, no increase in deficit spending, no special-interest influence (unions), no vote buying (Nebraska, Louisiana).

If only George Bush wasn’t still in charge, we’d have real change by now.

All the broken promises, all the failed legislation and delay (health care reform, immigration reform) is not President Obama’s fault or the fault of the Democrat-controlled Congress. It’s all George Bush’s fault.

Take for example the decision of Eric Holder, the president’s attorney general, to hold terrorists’ trials in New York City. Or his decision to try the Christmas Day underpants bomber as a civilian.

Two disastrous decisions.

Certainly those were bad judgments based on poor advice from George Bush.

Need more proof?

You might recall that when Scott Brown won last month’s election to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts, capturing “the Ted Kennedy seat,” President Obama said that Brown’s victory was the result of the same voter anger that propelled Obama into office in 2008. People were still angry about George Bush and the policies of the past 10 years, and they wanted change.

Yes, according to the president, the voter rebellion in Massachusetts last month was George Bush’s fault.
Therefore, in retaliation, they elected a Republican to the Ted Kennedy seat, ending a half-century of domination by Democrats.

It is all George Bush’s fault.

Will the failed administration of George Bush ever end, and the time for hope and change ever arrive?

Will President Obama ever accept responsibility for something — anything?

the small bill

Running against health care can be a winning ticket for Conservatives.

Liberals are betting that once enacted the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) will be a one-way ratchet, and cannot be repealed.   As long as they are in power they are correct, but I think, out of power, which they may be by 2012, their act can be repealed.  Here's why....

Unlike the British before the 1948 introduction of the National Health Services (NHS), Americans generally have access to decent health care.  Secondly, British society wholeheartedly supported NHS, where as in the US, most Americans do not support Obamacare.   Thirdly, we are a less hierarchical society, unaccustomed to rationing; and so when we receive inferior, rationed care, we will complain.

We must repeal Obamacare, but voters will rightly ask, "Replace it with what?"....
Now is the time to debate that and find that.   That being the replacement.

A strong contender is Jeffrey Anderson's "Small Bill".   Unlike the some 2,700 page monstrocity passed on another day of infamy, March 21, 2010, the small bill offers in one page, simple reforms that address most of the problems with our current health care system:   Insuring people with pre-existing conditions with a targeted risk pool, and lowering the cost of insurance through competition, while cutting the number of uninsured by 10 million people, and doing so without a dramatic increase in government control and at only 7% of the cost of Obamacare.

As Anderson says in the article "Small is Beautiful":  "If the Small Bill sounds too good to be true, that illustrates how colossally bad Obamacare is."   He continues, "Repeal and reform should be a winning message--- but only if Republicans have a serious replacement to put on the table, one that would do something meaningful about rising health-care costs and the plight of the uninsured.

It's worth a look..... go to www.smallbill.org  and see what you think.    If you have a little extra time, let me know what you think too.

Best Wishes,

Bernie Iven
